6th, 7th and 8th Grade Math
Mrs. Pham teaches math to the middle school students.
Middle school mathematics is to develop each student’s understanding of mathematics through a challenging and rigorous standard based according to California Common Core Standards. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiency” with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The first of these are the process standards of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections. The second are the strands of mathematical proficiency: adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding (comprehension of mathematical concepts, operations and relations), procedural fluency (skill in carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently and appropriately), and productive disposition (habitual inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one’s own efficacy).
In particular, math for grade 6, 7 and 8 will include the following topics: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry and Statistics and Probability.
Lower grade will learn to understand the above concepts, use and apply them to solve mathematical and real-world problems. Higher grades will analyze, apply and extend previous understanding of the concepts and procedures to more complex operations and problems. Algebra will also be taught and it covers the Real Number System, Radicals and Integer Exponents, Linear Systems and Functions, Polynomials and Rational Expressions and Congruency and Similarity of geometric figures.
